Winter Tales is inspired by the Danish author Isak Dinesen and her short story of the same title, based on the intersection of people’s lives. The work expanded into allegories of loss; the fleeting presence of youth represented by the artists’s daughter and her friends. Like much of Goodine’s work, the narratives are individualized acts within elaborate settings, here shot in the front yard of the homes where these subjects played as children in Indianapolis. The winter cold acts as a device, metaphorically freezing the motions of these young people, reminding us of the temporality of the body, beauty, and youth.
